Renfield the Review.
Nic Cage as Dracula. Normally that sentence would be enough to make any review an instant 5 stars. In this review that would also be the case if not for the fact that every part of this movie made it even more amazing.
Let’s start with Nicholas Hoult as Renfield. He played the pathetic Renfield to absolute perfection. You pitied him, you felt sorry for him, and you kind of hated him. Then, when he had his moment of character growth, you were by his side rooting for him until you realize that means killing arguably the best Dracula in ages.
Next is Awkwafina. Love her or hate her, she was great. She was a great foil to Renfield. There are a few great scenes in the police department that had me laughing out loud. She is potentially the only true, good force in the movie. She plays the part very well and her gravely voice adds to every scene.
There is a great cast of side characters that really round everything out. Ben Schwartz as Teddy Lobo is a particular standout. His bumbling gangster persona clashes with how much you just loves Ben Schwartz. Renfields support group is full of personality and humor as well. I hope to one day find out Carols story. She deserves better. Do better, Dracula.
Now on to the most important part, Nic Cage as Dracula. I could write pages upon pages about how Nic Cage figuratively and literally chews up every scene he is in. I would argue that this is the most Nic Cage Nic Cage has ever been. It’s glorious. Going in, I was unsure how much he would be in it and I was absolutely surprised. He is in it so much. The only downside is that he does take away from everyone else. How can you honestly compete with him?
I don’t know if this will spawn a franchise or a shared universe of comedic takes on the Univeral Monsters but I can truly hope. This was a great pallate cleanser of the normal superhero fan fare that has been going on in theaters for the better part of 17-ish years.
We give this one 5 Teddy Fucking Lobos out of 5.
