Double Picture Show at the Drive-In! (X/Pearl 2022)

I have been so excited to finally watch these two. When my gf (and excellent co-host Shawna) told me that the drive-in had a double feature of both, I jumped at the opportunity to go see them.

They made an odd but interesting decision to play Pearl first. I went in hearing through word of mouth that Pearl was awful. I didn’t feel that way. I thought Mia Goth played her role really well. The story was weirdly muddled. I didn’t quite understand who the family was. I got the dad was sick and they were being reclusive for fear of the flu. (This was filmed at the height of the pandemic, so that was not lost on me.). The gore and violence was great. The acting was amazing. It was as artful as anyone can expect from A24.

X on the other hand was dark, gritty and ultra violent. I was not expecting that from A24. Mia Goth, again, was excellent. Horror is definitely her genre. She is already a Scream Queen in my book. I will always love Brittany Snow. Jenna Ortega, wow, just wow. Watching this one second, we picked up all the Easter eggs from Pearl. I do get some hate for Pearl after watching X. It felt like such a different movie. X was far more straight horror where Pearl felt more like an art house film.

Either way, see both of them. Everything you could want or expect from an A24 horror movie. We were not disappointed and we are both sure you won’t be disappointed either.
